TRANSCRIPT: My name is Clio Austin and I'm a general pediatrician with Wake Forest Baptist Health. My clinical specialties at Wake Forest Baptist Health are general pediatrics - so I provide care for infants from birth up until individuals are 21. We do general well visits, sick visits and counseling on general good health and immunizations. The areas that I have a particular interest include educating families about taking care of their children with asthma, injury prevention, and obesity prevention. As well as providing support for mothers who are breastfeeding. My patient care philosophy is to empower parents and guardians to do the best they can to take care of their child, to really treat each child the way I would like my child to be treated. So I listen to the concerns the child has no matter how young they are. If they can articulate their concern, I want to hear it. And of course the concerns of the parent, and then try to come up with a plan that best meets the needs of that child. But also a plan that's practical, that a parent can really put into place and be able to follow through with the least amount of difficulty for them. I think it's important that every family has a medical home so that the parents have a place they can go to where they know their needs will be met, and that their concerns will be addressed and that the providers will know their child's history. And be able to provide the very best care and have a knowledge of what past problems have occurred and use that information to provide the best care for that child. I think being a parent has definitely helped make me more empathetic to the concerns that the parents have when they bring their children in, I've gone through many illnesses that most parents have experienced - general childhood illnesses. So I can understand the concern the parent has and somewhat what the child is experiencing. It helps me to be able to pinpoint what the parent's concerns are and to be able to reassure the parent and reassure the child that I've seen this - kind of been there, gone through it and to encourage them, or help them to understand that it will be better.
